The internet is an incredible resource, people go online to search for information, connect with their friends, play games, etc. Studies show that over a billion users access the internet every day, this shows that a lot of people can’t do without access to the internet. So what do you do when your computer connects to your wifi but is unable to access the internet?

Wifi connected but no internet connection is an error message that almost everyone has encountered at least once. When you see this message on your screen, it might be due to changes in your operating system, a virus in your computer’s internet settings, or just an issue with your wifi router.

Why this error message? How can it be resolved? Read on to find out more on the topic.

First Things First: Check The Router

If you can connect to your wifi, but not the internet, the first thing to do is to check if this is particular to only one device or all your devices. This will help you understand where the problem is coming from and how you can resolve it. Connect your phone to your wifi and try to access the internet through it. If you can achieve this objective, then it shows that the problem is with your computer and its wifi drivers. However, if the internet does not work on any of your other devices, it means that the problem lies with the router you are using.

If the problem is with the router, you can resolve it by simply restarting it. Restarting the router will delete all caches and restore all network settings to their default. You should be able to connect to the internet after this.

Wifi Connected But No Internet Access: Problem With The Device.

Most times when you can connect to your router but are unable to access the internet, the problem is with your computer’s internet settings or operating system.

When you have this problem, the first thing you should do is restart your device. Yes, simply turn off your computer, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. This simple process erases some settings and fixes simple errors that might have caused the problem.

If that does not work, use windows network troubleshooter. Go to the bottom right corner of your taskbar, right-click on the network icon and click on “troubleshoot problems”. Windows will try to determine what is wrong with your network connection and, in most cases, solve it.

In cases where the computer is unable to solve the problem itself, it will guide the nature of the error and how to resolve the issue.

DNS Cache Corruption

The DNS cache stores information about recent websites you visited, this makes it easier for your browser to load web pages from sites you have previously visited.

When the DNS cache becomes corrupted, either due to viruses from random internet ads or simple technical glitches, your computer becomes unable to access the internet because there’s a mismatch in your internet protocol (IP) address.

The best way to resolve this is to flush your DNS cache. To do this;

Type the word “command prompt” in your windows search bar

Open the command prompt program and type: ipconfig/flushdns

Run the command.

After this restart your computer and see if you can access the internet.

Outdated Network Drivers

Network drivers are responsible for connecting to the internet, if your device uses an outdated network driver, it could lead to miscommunication between your router and your computer, this will prevent access to the internet.

You can update your network drivers using the following steps:

Type the word “Device Manager” on your search bar and open the result

Go to “Network adapters” and click on it

Find “Wifi adapters” in the result and click on it

Choose to update the driver

Your computer will automatically update your driver to the newest version. However, you will need an internet connection to update your network drivers, so make sure you connect your computer to your router using an Ethernet cable. After this is done, try to connect to the internet using only your router.

Change in your IP Address

An incorrect IP address in your internet settings will result in a wifi connection but no internet access. Windows default internet settings allow your browser to automatically determine your IP address, when this address matches with the one from your router, then an internet connection will be enabled.

However, if you have manually set an IP address that is different from the one coming from your router, your computer will be unable to grant access to the internet.

You can resolve this issue using the following steps:

Go to the bottom right corner of your taskbar, right-click on the network icon, and select “Open Network and Internet Settings”

Select “Change Adapter Options”

When that opens, go to “Properties”, navigate to IPv4 “Internet Protocol Version 4” and double-click it.

Allow both IP address and DNS server address to be automatically obtained. Save the new settings, then try to access the internet again.

Disable Firewall and Antivirus

Firewall and antivirus software can block internet connections on your computer. Specific functions of antivirus software allow it to restrict internet access. For example, if the website you are trying to visit is not secure. Malware or viruses in your computer can also affect system functions including internet connection.

For the first part, try disabling any third-party antivirus software you use, then check to see if the internet connection has been restored. If it is restored, then your antivirus software has a function that allows it to block access to the internet, you might want to consider getting rid of it and installing a new one.

In the case of a virus or malware, use your Windows Defender to scan for and eliminate all threats.

Issues with internet connection are not easy to solve because there could be a million problems with a million solutions. However, the above are some of the most common causes of “wifi connected but no internet”. If you have tried them all but the problem persists, try these internet connection solutions.
